@flaviafontanagiusti

This semester of The Art Lab is underway and admission is currently closed.

Next semester runs Sept 1-Dec 31, 2024.

A mentee spoke these words to me, and although I know these words aren’t true, I know I have been guilty of feeling them about others.

Creativity won’t just strike you. Creativity is a discipline.

It takes showing up and doing the darn thing to create consistency.

Group accountability and deadlines have been major factors in my own consistency and I credit The Art Lab with my creative growth during 2023. I’d love for this group to do the same for you.

“It feels like you put a camera in your hands and creativity flows out.”

SLOW ART

The Art Lab is about slow, intentional art. This doesn’t mean spending hours upon hours creating your piece.

It means taking input and allowing it to simmer in your subconscious.

It means meeting with other creatives and hearing their thoughts and ideas.

It means learning new things and allowing it to shape your creativity in new and maybe unexpected ways.

It means wrestling and leaning into the discomfort.

But it also means deadlines to hold us accountable.

Because we know that expanding means pushing past the comfortable bounds as we now know them, but finding even more joy and beauty on the other side.

It is not frivolous to invest in yourself and your creativity; it fills you and allows you to be better in all areas of your life.

All creativity is mutually beneficial.

What Does Each Month Look Like In The Artists’ Collab?

  • Step 1: Prompt

At the beginning of each month, the prompt is posted. Relevant links such as artist background, articles, or general helpful info will also be linked.

Your goal isn’t to do anything at this point, it’s to take in the prompt and let it simmer in your subconscious.

  • Step 2: Group Meet

We will meet as a group on zoom to process the prompt. It’s our time to figure out what the prompt means to us and brainstorm how to translate it to an art piece.

The zooms are recorded, so even if you can’t attend, you can watch/listen later on! People say these are like podcasts, and they have been a big hit!

    July submission by @expert.in.nothing

  • Step 3: Tea Time

This is 1-on-1 time where we can chat about the prompt or about anything, really. If you have a project you’d like to discuss or just want to talk creativity, I’m there for it.

These are in addition to or in lieu of attending a group meet. Anyone in the group can sign up!

  • Step 4: Post

There is a pre-determined date at the beginning of the month for our art pieces to go LIVE on Instagram! I used deadlines as a way to motivate and to make sure your creation actually gets put out into the world.

This has become my favorite day of the month! It’s always so exciting and invigorating!

  • Step 4: Decompress

    Step 5: Decompress

We have a decompress zoom in which we get to talk about how the month went. What was our process? What did we learn? What did we like or not like? How have we grown?

Once again, this is recorded for viewing, so if you miss it you can listen later!

    January submission by @amyboydphotography

  • All Month Long

The Artists’ Collab is your support group. Post what you’re working on. Ask questions. Share your wins and losses.

There are also weekly prompts to get you paying attention and noticing the world around you.

Often people will post things they run across like podcasts, books, or videos. Or they will share a technique they are embracing. It’s truly a beautiful community.

Group Mentorship + Community+ Support + Inspiration + Deadlines + Encouragement

"Art opens the closets, airs out the cellars and attics. It brings healing….(but) art requires a safe hatchery.”

- Julia Cameron

The Artists’ Collab is your safe hatchery.

Why Group Mentorship?

Talking and creating with like-minded people is a true gift. Sharing our struggles and triumphs binds us together and helps us all grow.

Weekly prompts will keep creating at the fore of your mind. It will help you pay attention. The monthly prompt will be a chance to create a piece with intention. You will have the opportunity to join zoom calls to process the prompt and find your way in creating your piece. There is also a debrief to talk about your process and get feedback. Community is at the center of all we do.

Your art is important, essential even. It is not frivolous to invest in yourself and your creativity; it fills you and allows you to be better in all areas of your life.

This group is a safe space to hold your questions about art but also about craft. You need not be a film photographer or even a photographer to join. Just a curious artist wanting to grow.

You deserve a safe space.

*The community will take place in a closed Facebook group. You will receive a link to the group upon submission of payment.
