What is Call & Response?

Call & Response is a project I started in 2023 when I was going through a particularly tough season filled with anxiety and dread. At that time, the project didn’t have a name…and I didn’t even think of it as a project; I just thought of it as an earnest cry for help. I spent time every day doing grounding meditation, connecting with the earth, and being still in an effort to soothe my restlessness.

What surprised me is that as I started asking rhetorical questions, I began getting responses in the midst of my stillness. It was a time of divine assistance, and these events were so powerful that I began to document them. I took pictures of them either with my phone or an instant camera; sometimes I wrote the responses I received from the universe on the image.

As winter settled in and the ground froze, I got out of the habit of grounding. But I keep the instant images on my desk and sometimes I even look through them to remind myself of the messages the universe graciously whispered in my ear as I was needing an offering of help and comfort.

It was such a profound time that not only do I want to revisit this project, but I feel the need to share it with others.

The world is loud. It’s constantly shouting at us and trying to convince us everything is a dumpster fire. But the universe is quiet. The softness of Love doesn’t demand, but gently beckons. The universe is so much harder to hear when we go about our normal life tasks, that it might seem silent and uncaring. But I promise you it’s not. It just refuses to yell. It waits patiently for us to still ourselves.
